Zen Buddhism Ireland – FAQ
1. What is Zen Buddhism Ireland (ZBI)?
Zen Buddhism Ireland is a Buddhist sangha (community) based in Ireland, practicing in the Soto Zen tradition.
Our guiding teacher is Rev. Myozan Kodo Kilroy, a Dharma heir in the lineage of Taigu Turlur and Nishijima Roshi.
We emphasize zazen (“just sitting” meditation) and also include traditional ritual forms, including sewing the Okesa (Zen robe).
Our sangha welcomes people of all backgrounds and levels of experience.
2. Where and when do you meet in person?
Our Dublin Zen Centre is located at 11 Anglesea St, Temple Bar, Dublin, D02 NY01.
Weekly schedule for the centre:
Monday evening: 7:30 PM – 9:30 PM
Wednesday evening: 7:30 PM – 9:30 PM
Saturday morning zazen: 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM
For first-time participants: arrive early — doors open 30 min before sitting begins.
3. Can I join online? What is the Online Zendo schedule?
Yes — ZBI runs an Online Zendo.
Weekdays (Mon–Fri): 7:00 AM – 7:30 AM sitting
Weekends (Sat–Sun): 9:00 AM – 9:30 AM
Monday evening: 7:30 PM – 9:30 PM (two periods of zazen, with walking meditation, chanting, then a sharing circle or talk)

4. Do you offer retreats?
Yes, ZBI offers traditional Zen retreats. They are organized every few months and communicated out via our socials.
5. What is your lineage / tradition?
ZBI is in the Soto Zen tradition.
The sangha’s lineage traces back to Dōgen Zenji (founder of Soto Zen) and continues through Gudo Nishijima Roshi, Taigu Turlur, and now Myozan Kodo Kilroy.
We also honor the traditional Soto Zen practice of sewing the Okesa (Buddhist robe) as part of their commitment.
6. Do I need prior meditation experience to join?
No — everyone is welcome. ZBI explicitly states that their sangha “welcomes everyone, regardless of experience or background.”

7. What should I bring / wear when I come to a sitting?
Wear comfortable, loose clothes suitable for sitting meditation.
8. Who is the abbot?
The guiding teacher is Rev. Myozan Kodo Kilroy.
He is a fully ordained Soto Zen priest and a Dharma heir of Taigu Turlur, in the lineage of Nishijima Roshi.
9. Is Zen Buddhism Ireland a registered charity?
Yes — ZBI is a non-profit charity, registered in Ireland. Registered Charity Number: 20155384
10. Can I participate if I’m not a Buddhist?
Yes — the sangha is open to people regardless of their religious background.
